Calgary Crane Certification

Calgary Crane Certification - The Crane Certification Program covers the industry recommended content that will teach the safe and efficient operation of cranes. The person will train in the following: pre-operational, operational and post operating requirements; how to identify cranes and their component parts; rigging components and inspection/rejection criteria; how to determine overall lift capacity; and requirements specific to the work place where the trainees would be operating.

The requirements that must be carried out prior to operating a crane such as assigning authority for the pre-operational check; doing the sequential pre-operational check based on the specifications certified by a professional engineer or manufacturer's specifications; checking the log book for comments; checking the work area for hazards and obstacles; checking chains, cables, hooks safety latches and crane movement; ensuring the proper functioning of operational controls; and knowing how to make certain that the crane's disconnect switch/isolator is properly functioning.

The requirements to operating a crane would include the identifying of roles and responsibilities, and the determination of the requirement for a formal lift plan. The individual training would know how to do danger assessments for the different environmental circumstances, physical situations and workers. Subject matter includes determining when to seek competent support, the safest route and destination of loads, and load weight and centre of gravity.

Trainees should be able to identify an over-capacity lift, in addition to be able to choose appropriate rigging machinery, select load limitations, and to determine the safe position for the crane to work from. People training will review both universal and site-specific crane signals for lifts, and techniques for lifting, loading and traveling. Appropriate maintenance habits will likewise be included.

Individuals training would be assessed on their knowledge of the need for emergency response procedures for different scenarios such as an electrical or mechanical failure. They would be asked to describe shut down and parking procedures for safety and security, to follow tagging and lock out procedures, and to explain why near misses are reported and recorded to the right individual. Log book records need to be maintained.

The person training will learn the particulars of rigging, and learn the authority and responsibility for rigging. They would know to identify the various kinds of rigging, the load capacity ratings and storage procedures.

The requirements following operation of the crane will be taught also, learning to enter the defects and deficiencies; and to log the history of service and maintenance records, in accordance to the provincial, federal and state codes requirements.
